Need More Time to Do Your Taxes? File a Tax Extension
Filing an income tax extension with TurboTax is easy. There are three ways to apply.NOTE: The deadline to file an extension for your 2007 taxes has passed, but you can still use TurboTax to complete and file your tax return. If you owe taxes, you’ll pay less in penalties and interest if you file sooner. If you’re expecting a refund, get it faster by filing today.
If you can’t complete your federal tax return by the April 15 deadline for 2007 returns, TurboTax makes it easy to buy more time. File a federal tax extension by April 15, 2008, and include any estimated taxes due to avoid penalties and interest. You'll have until October 15, 2008, to file your taxes.
You have two options to file your tax extension:
1. Use TurboTax to Estimate Any Tax Due and Mail Extension
Start any TurboTax Online product for free, and add your personal and income information. Then click “Tools” and select “Topics & Forms,” (or “Search Topics or Forms” in Free Edition) and type “extension” to get to the online form. Print and mail the completed form (include any estimated taxes due) on or before April 15, 2008.
2. Print the Extensions Form and Fill It Out by Hand
Download IRS Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File (PDF) for free and print it. Send the completed form to the IRS address for your state (include any estimated taxes due)—postmark by April 15, 2008.
After you file your tax extension, remember to file your federal taxes by October 15.
